Quit corporate, and didn't know who he was without it

Background

N was a man in his mid-50s. He had quit corporate but had no idea what he wanted to do.

Observations from the call

The thing that was evident from early on was that when he talked, everything was about his professional achievements. It was literally the majority of the conversation.

It was clear he hadn't made peace with that part of his life ending. He didn't know where he was, who he was, or what he wanted. His career had been everything.

He was financially comfortable, so I suggested a simple task: write a list of everything he'd ever said he would do. I had done this myself when I walked away from corporate. I suggested he then take six months and work through the whole list. It was unlikely the list would give him any answers. It might, it might not. But those things would stop sitting in his head as 'what if'.

Working through the list would also work the work-identity out of him, mostly because he'd have so much more to talk about. He can see what comes up then. But for now, just take some time to enjoy life.

What changed

Sceptically, he is working through his list... we'll see. Ha.

Side note

A pattern I keep noticing with a lot of men is their struggle to lean into a side of themselves that doesn't require earning money, or just enjoying things.
