Made redundant, with her confidence on the floor

Background

L was a woman in her mid-30s. She had been made redundant, and it came as a complete shock. She was thinking about setting up on her own, but her confidence was on the floor.

Observations from the call

L talked about being in employment since she started work and not knowing any different. The redundancy gave her some extra cash that would allow her to set up her own practice from home.

She was nervous about whether she was good enough.

We talked through the fact that she was the product. The companies she worked for were selling her, so why couldn't she do it herself? The business was closing, so she could legitimately chase her customers as a first port of call.

Then we talked through the other commercial and operational parts of what she needed to do.

The big challenge was the classic self-employed behaviour of over-delivering for every customer and undercharging because she was now at home, even though the product (her) was the constant.

What changed

She is successfully running her own business. The flyers she printed out remain in a drawer, as she has no time for new clients.

I reminded her not to compete with other providers' social media content and just do her own thing. Good service, done well. No gimmicks.

Thank you so much. I don't think I would have had the confidence to go for it, if it weren't for talking through all of that with you.
